A fake Claude Code update, and a junk-rating warning

For about 11 hours, Cursor's extension marketplace served a tampered Claude Code build that tried to plant an SSH backdoor. On the money side, Blackstone reportedly now expects ANT debt to land in junk territory after the IPO, Nvidia is said to be weighing guarantees for an Anthropic-bound data center, and Steve Eisman says growth is cooling. Claude Code also has a new rule against cloning existing games.

The brief

  1. 01A malicious Claude Code extension (versions 2.1.312/2.1.313) sat in Cursor's marketplace for about 11 hours on October 29 and could have reached up to 5,000 users. Anthropic says its own systems were not breached. Version 2.1.314 is the clean update.
  2. 02Blackstone told investors in Anthropic's $63 billion chip financing that it now expects a 'high' junk (BB-range) rating after the IPO rather than investment grade, the FT reports.
  3. 03Nvidia is in talks to guarantee billions in debt for Nscale's West Virginia data center that Anthropic plans to use, according to The Information and Bloomberg. Nothing is signed.
  4. 04On CNBC, 'Big Short' investor Steve Eisman said ANT's growth has slowed sharply, from about 147% quarter over quarter to 45%, and that revenue per dollar of compute is slipping.
  5. 05Claude Code on Opus 5.5 now steers away from recreating a specific existing video game, even under a new name. Anthropic says original and genre games still work.

Tampered Claude Code extension in Cursor's marketplace tried to plant SSH backdoors

Up to 5,000 developers may have received the fake update during an 11-hour window. Anthropic says it did not build or publish it.

Cursor says that between about 2:27 a.m. and 1:35 p.m. PT on October 29, its VS Code extension marketplace offered a maliciously modified copy of the Claude Code extension, labeled Anthropic.claude-code versions 2.1.312 and 2.1.313, for Windows and macOS. A short loader added to the front of the extension ran as soon as the editor started, with no Claude chat required. It reported host details back to an attacker's server, including username, hostname, Git email, public IP and the names of environment variables that look like secrets. It also tried to add an attacker's SSH key, open a reverse SSH tunnel and set itself up to survive reboots.

Cursor says up to 5,000 users may be affected and that, because of bugs in the malware, the backdoor step usually failed unless Cursor was running with administrator rights. The reconnaissance data was still sent. Cursor pulled the package, helped take the attacker's server offline and plans to contact affected users. Some researchers say the bad build also passed through Open VSX. Anthropic's Felix Rieseberg said Anthropic's systems and employee laptops were not compromised, and that someone used access to Cursor's marketplace to publish a copy Anthropic did not build. Anthropic has pushed version 2.1.314.

If you use Claude Code in Cursor, update the extension and look in ~/.ssh/authorized_keys for a key labeled svc-telemetry. Cursor's notice includes remediation steps.

Blackstone now expects a junk rating for Anthropic after the IPO

That reverses its earlier guidance and could make the company's huge build-out more expensive to finance.

Blackstone, an anchor investor in the roughly $63 billion Project North Star chip financing for Anthropic, has told investors in that deal that it now expects the major rating agencies to give Anthropic a 'high' junk rating, in the BB range, after the IPO, the Financial Times reported Friday, citing people familiar with the matter. Blackstone had earlier said it expected an investment-grade rating by year-end.

The change matters because many insurers and pension funds limit how much sub-investment-grade debt they can hold, which raises borrowing costs. S&P, Moody's and Fitch have not formally rated Anthropic yet. Kroll gave the deal's $18 billion junior tranche a BB+ earlier this year. This is reported, not confirmed by Anthropic or Blackstone.

Nvidia weighs co-signing debt for an Anthropic data center in West Virginia

Guarantees worth billions would back Nscale's power and construction costs. Nothing has been signed.

Nvidia is in talks to give AI cloud provider Nscale billions of dollars in credit guarantees for the power infrastructure and construction of its Monarch campus in West Virginia, which Anthropic plans to use, The Information reported Thursday. Bloomberg later confirmed the talks through a person familiar with them. TechCrunch, citing The Information, says the structure under discussion would have Nvidia step in if Nscale defaulted on construction payments, temporarily take over the site and help find a new buyer and tenant.

Nscale's IPO filing shows Anthropic contracts worth up to about $44.6 billion for the first 460-megawatt building, which will use Nvidia Vera Rubin systems. A second deal of similar size for another building is under discussion. The terms could change, and Nvidia, Nscale and Anthropic have not confirmed the talks.

Steve Eisman: ANT's growth has slowed 'dramatically'

The 'Big Short' investor points to cooling quarterly growth and weaker revenue per dollar of compute.

Speaking on CNBC's Squawk Box on Thursday, Steve Eisman said Anthropic's quarter-over-quarter revenue growth fell from roughly 147% in the second quarter to about 45% in the third. He also cited an analysis showing revenue at 2.08 times compute and equipment expense in Q2, falling to 1.7 times in Q3. He called parts of the S-1 'extremely negative' for leaving out forward-looking metrics. He said he has cut risk in his own portfolio but is not net short.

Quarterly revenue is still rising quickly: from $11.6 billion in Q2 to $16.8 billion in Q3, which Anthropic told prospective investors earlier this month. In a separate CNBC piece, analysts said the open question is what it costs Anthropic to earn each additional dollar of revenue, and Morningstar noted the prospectus says little about how management expects growth to slow from here. Eisman's figures are his own analysis, not company guidance.

Claude Code will no longer rebuild someone else's game

A two-sentence prompt change on Opus 5.5 targets clones, including renamed ones.

Anthropic has confirmed it added a rule to Claude Code's prompt when running on Opus 5.5. The rule tells the agent to build original games, genre games and games from the user's own designs and assets, but not a recreation of a specific existing game, even if it is renamed or called original. An X user spotted the rule after it rolled out around October 27, and reported that there is no setting to turn it off.

Anthropic's Addy Osmani said the change exists because using Claude to infringe intellectual property violates the usage policy, and that the company will keep adjusting it to strike the right balance. Game Developer notes the move follows weeks of indie studios complaining about AI-assisted clones. Anthropic did not say whether other models in Claude Code are affected.
