Q3 is in the S-1: $17 billion in revenue, slower growth and an $895 billion bill

Anthropic's amended prospectus adds third-quarter results. Revenue rose 47% from the prior quarter to nearly $17 billion, but the company swung to a small operating loss and disclosed about $895 billion in spending commitments. The filing also shows internal Claude use, valued at list prices, now exceeds employee pay. The API gets server-side message threads, and Election Day arrives as one more hurdle before the roadshow.

The brief

  1. 01Q3 revenue was $16.96 billion, up 47% from Q2 (versus 144% growth the quarter before). The net loss shrank to $23.3 billion, and an operating loss of $567 million replaced Q2's $974 million operating profit.
  2. 02Total commitments, mostly for compute, now stand at about $895.4 billion, with roughly $70 billion due in the next 12 months. The filing still has no price range or share count.
  3. 03Measured at the prices Anthropic charges customers, internal Claude use passed monthly employee pay (excluding stock) in April and grew more than 250-fold from January to September, Business Insider reports from the filing.
  4. 04Message threads (beta) keep long conversations on Anthropic's servers, so each new API call sends only the latest messages. Fast mode for Opus 4.8 will be removed November 30.
  5. 05Bloomberg says Tuesday's midterm elections could tilt policy toward more AI skepticism, especially on data centers, just ahead of the expected roadshow.

Amended S-1: Q3 revenue nears $17 billion as growth cools and commitments hit $895 billion

Revenue rose 47% from Q2, but $5 billion in short-notice compute pushed Anthropic to a small operating loss.

Anthropic filed an amended S-1 on Monday that adds results for the quarter ended September 30. Revenue was $16.96 billion, up from $11.56 billion in the second quarter and $1.4 billion a year earlier. That is 47% sequential growth, down from 144% in Q2, Reuters reports. Nine-month revenue was $33.2 billion, about 13 times the same period last year. The figures line up with the roughly $16.8 billion Anthropic gave prospective investors in mid-October.

The net loss shrank to $23.3 billion from $66.3 billion in Q2. Most of it is a non-cash charge tied to convertible financing whose value rises with Anthropic's valuation. The nine-month net loss was about $104 billion, including a $94 billion accounting charge, AP reports. More telling, Anthropic posted an operating loss of $567 million after Q2's $974 million operating profit. The company attributes the swing mainly to about $5 billion paid for short-notice compute capacity, which caused revenue per dollar of compute to fall for the first time.

Total purchase and lease commitments, mostly for compute and infrastructure, are now about $895.4 billion, up from the roughly $637 billion in compute contracts described last week. About $70 billion is due in the next 12 months, and roughly $447.5 billion before the end of 2030. The filing also counts more than 11,900 customers paying at least $100,000 a year. It still does not include a price range, share count or deal size.

Anthropic's own Claude use, at list prices, now tops its payroll

This is a retail-price measure of usage, not a cash cost.

Anthropic's IPO filing says that in April, the value of Claude used inside the company, priced at what it charges customers, passed its monthly employee compensation excluding stock awards, Business Insider reports. By September, internal usage was more than 250 times its January level, and Claude wrote more than 90% of the code added to Anthropic's software that month.

Business Insider points out that this does not mean Anthropic spends more cash on AI than on salaries. The company runs its own models, so the retail-price figure measures how much staff use Claude, not what that use actually costs.

Claude API adds message threads so long agent loops send only what's new

Server-side conversation state cuts request size and time to first token. Opus 4.8's fast mode is going away.

Anthropic launched message threads in beta on Monday for the Messages API. Instead of resending the full history every turn, a client keeps the conversation on Anthropic's servers and sends only the new messages, which Anthropic says shrinks requests and reduces time to first token in long chats and agent loops. A thread expires five minutes after its last request and is deleted within an hour of its last use. The feature is available on the Claude API, Claude Platform on AWS, the Anthropic-managed Claude models on Google Cloud, and Claude in Microsoft Foundry.

Separately, Anthropic has deprecated fast mode for Claude Opus 4.8. Starting November 30, fast-mode requests to that model will return an error, and developers who want fast mode need to move to Opus 5.5.

Election Day lands right before ANT's roadshow

Bloomberg says gains for AI-skeptic candidates could raise the pressure on AI labs, especially over data centers.

Bloomberg describes Tuesday's US midterms as one of the biggest hurdles left for Anthropic's offering. Wins for AI-skeptic Democrats in one or both chambers of Congress, or in key governor's races, would likely add pressure on AI labs, particularly in fights over the fast build-out of data centers. Republicans have mostly stayed close to President Trump's support for the technology.

Reuters reported last month that the listing was likely to wait until after the election, and the roadshow is expected to begin as soon as next week. Anthropic has already been caught in state-level fights, from California's frontier AI rules to Texas pausing new data centers while it reviews grid risk.
